Formaldehyde-Free Veil Announcement

Glavel, Inc. Announces Formaldehyde-Free Veil

Burlington, VT; April 22, 2022 – Glavel, Inc., a foam glass manufacturer out of Burlington VT has announced that their manufacturing in Essex Junction VT is officially using formaldehyde-free veil. Used since the onset of manufacturing in February, this formaldehyde-free veil is used in the manufacturing of foam glass gravel as a base below the pre-fired recycled glass powder mixture. Upon firing, the veil is baked into the foam glass gravel, partially dissolving into the foam glass gravel.

According to the Living Building Challenge, red list materials are ‘worst in class’ materials, chemicals and elements known to cause serious risk to human and environmental health. These materials should seldom be used and ought to be immediately phased out of use in the built environment. Formaldehyde is a listed red material. Historically, veil used in the manufacturing process has contained trace amounts of formaldehyde; but with recent changes in material technology, Glavel, Inc. is one of the first manufacturers to use a formaldehyde-free veil.

This pairs with Glavel, Inc.’s commitment to clean materials, which is an ongoing process to eliminate harmful materials from all manufacturing processes. On the elimination of formaldehyde from the manufacturing process, CEO Rob Conboy said “We’re always seeking to improve our manufacturing; both in terms of energy efficiency and green, healthy inputs. Securing this formaldehyde-free veil was not easy, but it’s worth the effort. We’ll be on the lookout for other improvements to ensure that Glavel stays on the leading edge of green building well into the future.”
